El Día de la Tierra o Earth Day se celebra cada año el 22 de abril en muchos lugares del mundo. Se trata de un día que pretende crear conciencia sobre los problemas de superpoblación, la contaminación y todos aquellos problemas ambientales que amenazan al planeta Tierra.

El 22 de abril de 1970 millones de ciudadanos estadounidenses se manifestaron y movilizaron junto al activista Gaylord Nelson para aumentar la concienciación social del planeta. Dicha manifestación dio lugar a una serie de leyes destinadas a aumentar la protección del medio ambiente.

En el año 1972 tuvo lugar la primera cumbre sobre el medio ambiente La Cumbre de la Tierra de Estocolmo, cuyo principal objetivo es que los líderes mundiales se sensibilizaran sobre la magnitud de los problemas ambientales.

En 1990 se celebró por primera vez el Día de la Tierra a nivel internacional. Más de 200 millones de personas participaron en las actividades programadas sobre el medio ambiente. En este momento la población comienza a darse cuenta de la importancia que tiene para el ser humano el medio ambiente.
Desde ese momento son numerosas las manifestaciones a favor de la conservación de la Tierra con más de 1.000 ONG´s de todo el mundo y más de 140 países unidos para conseguir un mismo fin.

En el año 1995 tuvo lugar el XXV Aniversario del primer Día de la Tierra. Este año fue clave para evaluar los daños ambientales ocurrido en los 25 últimos años.

La proclamación del día 22 de abril como el Día Mundial de la Tierra supone el reconocimiento de nuestra existencia en la Tierra así como la responsabilidad que implica promover la armonía con la naturaleza y nuestro planeta.
