El 20 de abril se celebra el Día Mundial de la Marihuana, una planta que ha causado una profunda polémica, debido a su uso y efectos en el cuerpo humano y en la sociedad.
El origen de esta fecha se remonta al año 1971, cuando un grupo de estudiantes de California (Estados Unidos) denominado Los Waldos se reunían a una hora fija al terminar sus clases a fumar marihuana (4:20 de la tarde), estableciendo así el día 20 del mes 4 (abril) como el Día Mundial de la Marihuana. De hecho, el número 420 es un código reconocido mundialmente para referirse a la marihuana.
Aunque la celebración de este día es muy controvertida, se destacan los beneficios del uso del cannabis, dadas sus propiedades curativas, siendo aprobado legalmente en algunos países con fines medicinales.
Es una sustancia psicotrópica que se obtiene de la mezcla de hojas y flores secas de la planta de cáñamo índico (cannabis sativa), junto con sustancias aromáticas y azucaradas. Produce efectos y sensaciones euforizantes y alucinógenas.
Igualmente se le conoce con otras denominaciones informales, como weed, ganja, pot, grass, herb y Mary Jane.
El cannabis medicinal es utilizado terapéuticamente para tratar algunas enfermedades y aliviar determinados síntomas. Está referido al uso de las preparaciones o principios activos de la planta Cannabis Sativa, denominados cannabinoides (tetrahidrocannabiol o THC y el cannabidiolo CBD).

Este hecho ha sido considerado como un peldaño o camino para la legalización de la marihuana con fines lúdicos y terapéuticos, así como una estrategia para hacer frente al narcotráfico y disminuir sus consecuencias e impacto en la sociedad.
La Organización Mundial de la Salud ha estipulado que el uso del Cannabidiol (CBD) como marihuana medicinal funciona como paliativo para enfermedades crónicas y para pacientes con epilepsia, ya que reduce el dolor y la inflamación. Además no genera adicciones en los pacientes que la consumen en las cantidades indicadas.
